19th Century U. S. Patent Coffee Roasters

People have asked, “why the heck did I start collecting U. S. Patent coffee roasters?” I was a project engineer for McKesson Corp. and had a love for mechanical devices, antiques and history. That coupled with a real love for coffee and that starts to answer that question. For years I did home roasting and bought my 1st patent roaster on eBay. Little did I know that 20 years later I would own over a dozen of these ultra rare U.S. Patent roasters.

Thousands of general stores all across the U.S. both retail and wholesale, sold green coffee beans which were roasted at home long before the days of packaged coffee. Thousands of these early roasters were small and meant to fit into the eye of wood burning stoves. They were globe or cylindrical in shape.

Many times I've looked at the above image and wondered why No. 11 was the mystery roaster. No explanation was ever given for it. The mystery has been solved. Not only do I know who patented it I now own it. It has. Its own boiler and steam engine. All of my other roasters have a hand crank but this has steam.
